China, from the pagoda at Xiuding Temple on Mount Qingliang near Anyang in Henan province. An Architectural Brick with Ogre Mask, created during the Tang dynasty (A.D. 618-907), likely produced in the second half of the 8th century. Made from molded terracotta and featuring remnants of slip pigment, this piece measures 42.0 x 36.2 x 11.4 cm. Gifted to the Art Institute of Chicago by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bro, with support from the Russell Tyson Fund in 1984, accession number 1984.1340.
