Head of Agrippina the Elder
myminifactory
This exquisite marble head-portrait sculpture showcases Agrippina the Elder, an influential member of Rome's powerful Julio-Claudian dynasty. Born around 14 BC, she is the daughter of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, a devoted ally of Rome's first emperor Augustus, and Julia the Elder, Augustus' own daughter. At her birth, her brothers Lucius and Gaius held the positions of adoptive sons to Augustus, serving as his successors until their untimely deaths in AD 2 and 4. Upon their demise, Germanicus, Agrippina's cousin, was appointed as the adopted son of Tiberius under Augustus' carefully crafted succession plan in AD 4, which included Tiberius' adoption by Augustus himself. In a strategic move to strengthen ties with the Julian family, Agrippina was married to Germanicus. The sculpture was unearthed in Soli.
