Head of a wise virgin
myminifactory
This sculpture is a replica of a head seen on many sculptures lining the entrances to Strasbourg Cathedral. The cast only includes the front side of the head, indicating that it was created from just this view. The original artwork, found as part of a larger scene on the West Facade's South Portal Tympanum, shows an event known as the Last Judgement and the Wise and Foolish Virgins. This story is often linked to medieval scenes of the Last Judgement because it serves as a warning for people to prepare for the Second Coming. The leftmost figure in a group of four depicts a seductive man who is offering apples to the virgins while smiling. Although he looks handsome, his back is infested with ugly reptiles. The virgins standing next to him have dropped or lowered their lanterns, giving in to temptation. This virgin, from a group whose groom on the left represents Christ, is shown as one of the wise virgins, holding her lantern safely while displaying refined beauty.
