Head of a kouros

Throughout the sixth century B.C., accomplished Greek artists created remarkably lifelike depictions of the human figure. During this period, two distinct forms of freestanding, large-scale sculptures dominated: the male kouros, a standing nude youth exuding strength and vitality, and the female kore, a standing draped maiden radiating elegance and poise. Strategically placed in sanctuaries and cemeteries outside the city walls, these grand stone statues served as proud dedications to the gods or as solemn grave markers honoring the deceased. Influential Athenian aristocrats frequently commissioned expensive funerary monuments within the city and its surroundings, often constructing them for family members who had tragically passed away in their youth. Such elaborate monuments also took the form of stelai, frequently adorned with intricate relief decorations.
