Head of a kore

Head of a kore

myminifactory

This head was discovered within the sacred precincts of Ptoan Apollo's sanctuary in Boeotia, crafted by a local artisan with exceptional skill. The kore is essentially the female counterpart to the kouros, depicting either nude youths or draped women standing tall - a recurring theme throughout the Archaic Greek period, which ultimately laid the groundwork for the refinement of Classical sculpture during the 5th century B.C. These statues were often dedicated to various deities and strategically positioned at the entrance of sacred sites or serving as an integral part of monumental tombstones.
