Head of a giant, Pergamon altar

Despite centuries of investigation, it remains impossible to determine all fragments of the Great Frieze's original location. This includes the head of this colossal figure. Despite its even facial features, it must be an adversary of the gods. This is evident from the unruly hair and elaborate eyebrows, as well as the hair between them. With such distinctive characteristics, Greek artists depicted giants as a balance of restraint and abandon. Like many fierce hybrids, this giant also appears to defy his fate, undoubtedly a powerful deity. In anticipation of an attack, his mouth is open in a thunderous scream.
