Head of a Fair Haired Boy

Head of a Fair Haired Boy

The head of a young man with blond hair is evident from well-preserved yellow paint residues on his locks when discovered. A thick mane of hair ends in rows of curls at the front and is braided at the back, giving him somewhat heavy, fleshy features. His head is noticeably tilted to the right, matching the lower torso fragment typically linked with it, which also shows early classical pose elements with weight on the left side. The schematic treatment of his hair connects this work with its archaic predecessors. A severe, vacant expression on his face recalls the Kritios Boy from Athens' Acropolis, dating closely to the same period. His head is strongly tilted to the right, with a corresponding shift in the torso fragment characteristic of the emerging Early Classical style. The association with Persian debris is often cited but uncertain, leaving no clear terminus ante quem. Some scholars detect a Peloponnesian quality in this piece, described as a heaviness of form, though there's no concrete evidence to link it with any known sculptor.
