A bodhisattva is a highly evolved being who has achieved enlightenment through great compassion. They possess the bodhicitta, a spontaneous wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. According to Tibetan Buddhism, a Bodhisattva is one of four sublime states that humans can achieve in life (the others being an Arhat, Buddha, or Pratyekabuddha). The term "bodhisattva" has evolved over time and was originally used specifically to refer to the Buddha's former lives. In early Indian Buddhism, the Jatakas depicted the various attempts of the bodhisattva to develop qualities like self-sacrifice and morality. Bodhisattvas are often featured in Buddhist art.
