Head of a Bearded Deity

The sharp turn from side to side at the back of the neck reveals that the head originates from a herm rather than a statue figure. Herms, rectangular pillars topped with a head of Hermes, first appear in records during the last quarter of the sixth century B.C. These monuments were primarily used as boundary markers and sentinels guarding entrances and thoroughfares. In the fifth century B.C., other deities such as Zeus also took on herm form, and the monuments' functions expanded significantly. Unfortunately, it is impossible to determine which god this head represents. The intricate hairstyle made up of two long braids coiled around the head and secured by a flat band is commonly found in images of Zeus or Poseidon. The eyes embody a classic representation of ancient Cypriot-Attic art.
