The monasteries amassed colossal riches by renting out their properties for residential, commercial, and manufacturing purposes. Some of this wealth was invested in grand renovations to the spiritual buildings and upgraded living quarters for the monks and nuns. The Priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital provided patients with complimentary room and board as long as they agreed to leave their possessions to the Priory upon their passing.
