Head Carving, Melrose Abbey
sketchfab
Look up at the walls of the Commendator's House in Melrose and you'll likely spot this grimacing head carved from fine-grained sandstone. The naturalistic carving depicts a balding man with a smile, showing his teeth or tongue. His hair is shown by parallel wavy lines, while the eyebrows and chin are quite pronounced. This might have been a caricature portrait that dates back to the early 1300s. The head originated as an ornamental feature of Melrose Abbey in Scotland's Borders region.
