HDX Metal Shelving Connector
thingiverse
Do you like HDX metal shelving but find they don't make them tall enough? I had two sets of HDX shelves from Home Depot with dimensions of 37 inches high, 36 inches wide, and 14 inches deep. My guess is that the shelves are only sold with a maximum height of 37 inches for stability, safety, and legal reasons - smaller footprint plus greater height equals less stable. I really wanted to stack these shelves but couldn't find any official way to do it safely. The bottom posts have welded threaded holes for plastic feet, while the top posts have removable plastic caps, but no threading inside. So, I created my own part called the HDX Metal Shelving Connector. You simply remove the feet from one set of shelves and screw in this part. On another set of shelves, you remove the plastic caps, then insert the bottom of this part into the top post. Keep in mind that these shelves were not designed to be this tall, so use extra caution if you decide to do it. Use them at your own risk; I won't be responsible for any harm caused by your shelves tipping over. Consider using a wall anchor to avoid this happening. This part is made specifically for the HDX shelves from Home Depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-37-in-H-x-36-in-W-x-14-in-D-3-Shelf-Wire-Unit-in-Chrome-EH-WSHDI-006/204603431 Please note that pictures of this part show the bottom of the rack where the feet usually screw in. Once you screw this connector into the bottom posts for the top shelving, flip it over and place it on top of another rack. This design could be modified to support shelves from other manufacturers as well. This thing was modeled in Fusion 360 in three sections: base, spacer, and screw. See below for steps.
