The ocean floor and the Hawaiian Islands are meticulously modeled. Vertical exaggeration is significantly increased to 25 times. The .stl file contains a staggering 3.6 million facets. This is just one tile of a comprehensive set of 32 Earth elevation tiles sourced from the ETOPO2 database. Notably, detailed information on how seafloor depths are measured by satellites using the height changes in water caused by gravity can be found in the Smith & Sandwell report. The instructions and major sources of data are listed below. Key Sources of Data: Seafloor elevations between latitudes 64° North and 72° South derive from the Smith and Sandwell (1997) research. These elevations are based on satellite altimetry observations carefully combined with quality-assured shipboard echo-soundings conducted by Dr. Walter H.F. Smith of NOAA's Laboratory for Satellite Altimetry, and Dr. David T. Sandwell, Director at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics in San Diego, California. For more detailed explanations on data generation consult: - Smith and Sandwell (1997): "Global Sea Floor Topography from Satellite Altimetry and Ship Depth Soundings," published in Science Magazine volume 277. Seafloor elevations below latitude 72° South are sourced from the US Naval Oceanographic Office's (NAVOCEANO) DBDBV, which is available at version 4.1, spaced out by gridded at five minutes. Older seafloor data such as those in DBDB5 can also be found. Above the 64-degree latitude north the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean's (IBCAO) newest Version One provides additional valuable elevations sources along with Jakobsson et al.'s references listed further on: Seafloor Information Southwards and more about its reference online by following here: More. Details about it are readily found at (more info follows here online), click on hyperlink). To know land's topography the best option available is: Globe's Project, established globally. This highly acclaimed DEM gives 3 arc second precise topographical elevation spacing. Developed and verified scientifically. Key global data project was initially spearheaded by (see international website details in original GLOBE site) to serve as a model reference tool that contributes towards international satellite observational Data collection & sharing amongst Earth observing satellites and nations, also it was led for this major project: (original click through details will follow shortly), It features maps made accessible globally through a map which represents an actual geographical global terrain. Its data were created through cooperative data contribution process shared by various countries working under unified international framework to aid our current modern technologies using Global Elevation topography of Planet, and hence Globe team can see all its parts, from USA’s Imagery & Land Info (FAIRFX), National Lands information agency. (Fairfax’s national agencies of geography in land information service data centre), Tsukuba, Geographical Survey Japan’s survey for that geographic lands area information, the German satellite Earth’s data (DLR), Germany also NASA and its associated bodies (U.S) from USA.
