I only take off my wide-brim boonie hat's chin strap when it's really windy outside. I don't like it flapping around on the back of my neck either. This clip has a 2mm hole to grab onto the hat brim and another hole to thread the cord through, designed specifically for a 7mm cord and a 3mm thick brim. Unfortunately, it will need some support.
