Hat Polykite, the First Aperiodic Monotile
thingiverse
On March 20, 2023, a group of computer scientists (David Smith, Joseph Samuel Myers, Craig Kaplan and Chaim Goodman-Strauss) revealed their discovery of the holy grail of tiles. A simple 13-sided shape, nicknamed the "hat polykite", is the first shape known that can cover a plane indefinitely without ever repeating a pattern. In the world of math, this shape is known as an "aperiodic monotile", also called an "einstein" (or the German phrase for "one stone"), presumably to rule them all! Photo Credit: arXiv (2023).
