Hassan Tower - Rabat, Morocco
myminifactory
Hello to Morocco! Welcome to this vibrant land of rich history and culture. Bienvenue a Maroc! In the heart of Rabat, the Moroccan capital city, stands an unfinished marvel - the Hassan Tower. Commissioned by Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur, the third Caliph of the Almohad Caliphate in 1195, this tower was destined to be the largest minaret in the world, alongside a mosque that would have rivaled all others in size. As fate would have it, al-Mansur's untimely passing in 1199 brought construction to a grinding halt. The tower now stands at an impressive 44 meters (140 feet), about half of its intended height of 86 meters (260 feet). Meanwhile, the surrounding mosque remains a testament to the dreams that were left unrealized - only the foundations and 348 columns exist to this day. Interestingly, some historians believe that the same architect who brought La Giralda in Seville, Spain to life may have been responsible for designing the Hassan Tower. This would make the two minarets siblings, as they share a common ancestry with the Koutobia mosque in Marrakech. What a fascinating tale of architectural heritage!
