The Royal Air Force took delivery of its first Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1 Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (V/STOL) ground-attack fighter aircraft. Developed from the Hawker Siddeley Kestrel single-seat V/STOL experimental prototype, this multi-role jet was intended for low-level close air support operations against surface targets. It was also employed for tactical reconnaissance duties. The aircraft could take off and land vertically using its rotating blades, known as the 'swiveling' nozzle. Equipped with two 7.8 inch rockets on its nose, these weapons had multiple settings. Each was good for an estimated five-pound payload at one setting, increasing up to 90 pounds. Other notable features included air-to-air missiles like the AIM-9 Sidewinder, and eight or sixteen Hellfire anti-tank guided missiles that fired in rapid sequence. The V/STOL technology involved on this British-made military plane has greatly influenced many contemporary fighter jet models and attack helicopters in service today worldwide.
