Harpocrates served as the embodiment of confidentiality, secrets and silence in the distinctive Hellenistic faith cultivated in Ptolemaic Alexandria (he also symbolized hope). This deity was derived from the Egyptian child god Horus who personified the newborn sun that rises each morning at dawn. Harpocrates's designation originated as a Hellenization of the Egyptian name Har-pa-khered or Heru-pa-khered, signifying "Horus the Child".
