Instructions v1.0.1These are SVG files to be used to create painting stencils to decorate a bat from the Suicide Squad Kill the justice league game. This Is one of Harley Quinns bats from the game.SVG files can be loaded into a Cricut machine or similar.Design and instructions by @LeftBrainCo (Insta, Etsy & other places)SOFTWARE:https://www.gimp.org/downloads/Wooden Baseball Bat:• Size: 32" or 31.5" tall, made of ash wood. Example source: https://www.etsy.com/listing/569619485/3-wooden-baseball-bats-free-shipping• If the bat has a cupped end, flatten it with a saw then sand it.Paint and Supplies:• Red, neon-ish blue, vivid yellow, neon-ish pink, black, white, brown paint.• For the pink, blue and red that you use for the batman head drawings consider using a paint pen, they make it a lot easier.• Paint thinner for diluting paint.• Brushes, newspapers, paper towels for applying and distressing paint.• Painter’s tape• Flat-edge screwdriver for creating scratchesSafety:• Gloves (Thick garden gloves)• Safety googles or glasses• Tarp if painting insideDecorative Elements:• Batman doll (Search "Funko Batman Plushie" recommended).(The doll is much bigger than the one on the bat, but the closest I found, I am working on making a 3d model of the batman plushie from the game).• White cloth hockey tape 1" wide (e.g., Renfrew brand).• Yellow furniture tac (e.g., Uxcell Upholstery Nails Tacks).• 1" wide Aluminum foil tape for a metallic look (Search for high temp, insulated etc to find a similar pattern in the tape.). ( I ended up cutting this down to be much slimmer than 1" using a ruler and blade. It ended up being between 1/2" and 2/3")• Neon-colored flexible adhesive bandages (e.g., brand ASSURED) or craft foam for DIY band aids. The scale of these can be tricky if you want it exact. You might consider making your own on a vinyl cutter.• Black wire Christmas lights with 6 blue and 6 red bulbs. I searched for multi color.Tools that are spendy & Misc:• Cricut or similar for cutting SVG files. You can also print the shapes, then cut the stencils by hand.• Cricut vinal, and long matt if you can, if not you might have to cut the stencil into smaller sections to fit it.• Dremel with engraving bit or similar tool for etching/scratching the wood (test the dermel if doing this as it might not work for you) I am hand scratching mine..• Sandpaper for distressing.• Hot glue/glue gun and or super glue for securing elementsGeneral Instructions:*If you intend to use this for cosplay, you might have to use a foam prop so it is con-safe. Most cons will turn away dangerous weapons, such as a solid wood baseball bat. If using foam please test these techniques carefully as this guide is mean for a wooden bat. For example foam might get eaten by paint thinner, and you should not use fire on foam etc..Distress the bat, beat it up, burn it sand it, dent it etc...Paint the RED, and play with distressing the red. ( I did a few random sprays then sanded them back quite a lot.Add finger prints and initial damage you can always do more later.Use a pencil to mark where the blue layer goes. Also use the "Don’t lose your head" template to pencil in where you will scratch this. You can then scratch the words into the wood using a Dremel with engraving bit (Can be tricky) or whatever tool you find matches the look you want. Be really careful carving tools will help but don't stab yourself by accident it hurts.5.a Line up the blue with the markings and paint. Consider sanding and distressing the blue a bit before applying the white, you can sand it back slightly where you do not want it to stick out past the white, usually there are two sides that extend more than the other two sides.TIP: any time you are putting these stencils on the bat use clear transfer tape to line it up, it makes is so much easier.a. Stick transfer tape on top of vinyl after peeling off what you dont want to transfer.b. Remove backing from vinylc. Line it up and press to the surfaced. Remove transfer tapee. Experiment on a spare piece of wood if you need to, sometimes putting a clear coat first then applying the actual paint can help a lot with bleed where paint soaks under the tape if its not a perfect bond.Paint the bottom of the handle red, it should wrap around the knob but not cover the shaft of the bat. (Consider using a wood filler first, then sand it smooth, this makes getting the fine details in stencils later a lot easier, you can do this wherever there is solid paint.)Top of the bat needs to be painted a solid yellow do not worry about getting the paint drips just get the top a nice yellow.7.Apply the Metal and white tape, you will have to experiment with how to age this stuff, and how to add red always start with dry brushing, and test it on small pieces first. You can distress these before you put them on the bat, but you will want to do it after as well so it looks like it happened while on the bat.If the tape does not stick well you can use hot glue or super glue to help bond it. Some tape will be better than others.now you can add the paint drips, experiment on a piece of wood before going all in on this part. Don’t forget to pause dry and distress. (Add a glob of paint ..not too big at first where you want a drip, it can be a wider glob if you like. then start tapping the handle again concrete it wijll force the paint to drop and drip, you can layer it for more so start with a little until you get the hang of it.)Now it's time to let it all dry and apply the white paint layer, note is on top of the metal tape. Take your time to line up this stencil.Stencil the batman masks on top and bottom of the bat. Then stencil the eyes and mouth.(I ended up just hand drawing the x over the eyes using a paint pen, it was a lot easier. The paint pens also seemed to work well for other small details.Arrange the Christmas lights. not sure on how to tac this down yet but it starts with the furniture tac in the hocky tape handle, with the yellow furniture tac holding it in place. You might be able to glue or stable the other end behind the batman doll. You can also staple the wire to the bat where the band aids will cover.Add Band-Aids, I would glue these in place as they are not likely to hold very well. I used super glue.Let it sit for a day or two then come back and sand/ add paint etc here and there, don't forget fingerprints in the paint! As a nice touch add a few scratches with your tool of choice, and don’t forget to do a brown/yellow wipe on wipe off here and there (Practice on similar wood if you can before). The fingerprints in the game prop are going to be hard to achieve you can skip this if unsure, it won't ruin the file outcome.TIPS:• Search youtube for distressing tips Adam Savage has some good ones.• Step away from the distressing for a day or so then come back sometimes it helps.• Safety First• Order of operations is huge, think threw what paint goes down first etc.• You can always sand it down and re-start.• Dry brushing is huge, tiny bit of paint then dry the brush on a paper towel and paint with the dry brush.• Black paint will darken stuff with dry brush a lot faster than expected, thin it if you can.• When distressing think about the story of the distressing, does a person grab the bat here a lot (Maybe add some dark dirty bits there) would this bit get dented from hitting solid objects? Etc. Distress with intent of telling the story. Look up images of old used bats for reference ;)• Use scrap wood to experiment with ideas, and not all dirt is black, ugly yellow is your friend.• You can also add clear coat in random spots jus lightly then sand it or mask it off before you spray with torn tape for another layer of distressing.• Make sure the materials you use work for the object you are painting/distressing. If not using real wood a lot of these techniques need to be modified to not cause bad reactions with the foam or other materials.Disclaimer for Use:By downloading or using the SVG file set ("Files") provided, you acknowledge and agree to the following terms:No Affiliation: These Files are created by an independent artist and are not officially endorsed, sponsored, or affiliated with the creators or owners of the video game from which the prop designs are inspired. No Warranty: The Files are provided 'as is' without any warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
