One of Britain's most isolated and breathtakingly situated Roman forts, Hardknott (located in Cumbria, UK) held a strategic position overlooking the Eskdale Valley and the ancient Roman road to Ravenglass. Established at the dawn of the second century AD, this compact, three-acre fort was designed for control and surveillance. Every Roman fort came equipped with granaries to store the staple food source for soldiers: grain. The model depicts two such buildings. Constructed with robust outer walls, these structures likely supported the weight of their upper layers and slate roofs. Their raised wooden floors ensured dry conditions, standing on still visible piers that add to the fort's durability. The intricate model was crafted from 419 photographs, providing a meticulous representation of Hardknott Roman Fort's architecture and layout.
