People often accumulate stacks of hard drive platters, each one meticulously polished to reveal a highly reflective aluminum surface. I reasoned that these disks must have a practical application in 3D printing. So, I opened 123D Design and created two distinct designs for drink coasters with built-in display bases - one based on a cylindrical shape with straight walls, the other inspired by a torus with curved surfaces.
