Happy Fathers Day Cake Topper inspired by an image. Scale to the size of your cake.

Updated: Made legs longer and pointed. I was told the topper needed to sit above the fruit on the cake. Also rotate the original SVG to make it level, and legs parallel.

How I Designed This

How to design your own thing like this

Use Inkscape to import an image of something you've drawn or have a picture of. A high contrast image is best, with little to no background. Select the imported image in inkscape and choose Path->Trace Bitmap. Adjust the threshold settings to get rid of despeckling. At this point you can add black rectangles for cake topper feet. Save as an SVG.
Import into your favorite CAD tool (I like Fusion360 which is about as overkill as you can get for cake toppers) and select the areas you'd like to extrude. Extrude the areas you'd like, to the proportion of the rest of the topper. No need to worry about scale on these informal type parts. Export as STL.

Once you get the STL into your slicer you can scale to the size you want. This is why it was good to make the extrusion distance the correct proportion to the rest of the topper. If the thickness is too much or two little, you can scale the Z axis independently so it will be strong enough for your application.

Enjoy.
Category: Kitchen & Dining
