One of the most celebrated Hindu gods, Hanuman's valor, fortitude, and fidelity throughout the Ramayana epic are universally recognized. Here, he shows reverence to Rama by raising his left hand in homage while engaging in a lively conversation with his Lord. This sculpture was part of a comprehensive ensemble featuring Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana at its core. It was included among a collection of portable icons kept by Vaishnava temples in South India for ceremonial use. Characteristic of Chola-period representations, Hanuman has taken on human form, with only his face and tail confirming his monkey nature. Among the most exquisite bronze images of Hanuman to have survived from the Chola kingdom of south India, this work embodies his noble, virtuous character with great nuance.
