Summary: Using Your Phone as a Direction-Finder is Smart Reasons abound to rely on your iPhone or Android phone as a direction-finder rather than sticking with a dedicated GPS unit. For starters, the phone allows access to your address book for map apps, and it responds to voice commands seamlessly. With Siri at your beck and call, you simply need to push the Home Button to initiate searching apps, telling her exactly what you want. Mounted on your visor, the phone also serves as a convenient hands-free speakerphone, with Siri dialing numbers effortlessly. Instructions: Building Your Hands-Free GPS System The Hands-Free GPS is designed for 3mm carbon fiber tubes, cut to 12 inches long, which can be purchased at Amazon.com. Alternatively, you can use 1/8 inch bamboo skewers from the grocery store or 1/8 inch steel rod or wooden dowels from the hardware store. To begin, wrap painter's tape around the carbon fiber tube where it will be cut with a hacksaw. Next, secure your phone to the system using four zip ties, creating two straps across the back of the device. Remove the buckle from tie #2 and attach it to the belt of tie #1, then repeat this process with tie #4 and tie #3. Tighten the zip ties while the iPhone is in place, ensuring a snug fit on the phone holder. Trim any excess zip tie material. Assemble the system as depicted, inserting your phone into its designated slot. If necessary, drill out holes to accommodate the rods. Apply a small amount of super glue to secure the rods to the plastic components. Using Your Hands-Free GPS System Insert the rods and visor bracket between the visor and the car's roof. Position the phone near the mirror or windshield edge to minimize visual obstruction while driving. The system has been tested on iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 models, but adjusting the scale of one axis on your printer may accommodate different phone sizes. If you try this with another type of phone, please share your experience in the comments section below.
