Handle Insert for Clothes Basket - Design Example
prusaprinters

While this print was made for a pretty limited purpose, I thought some of the design considerations involved in making it might be instructive when considering the design and printing of “missing parts.”

This handle insert fits my Sterilite brand clothes basket (but seems to be standardized for many of their other products). My clothes basket normally has four of these handle inserts (see photos), but somehow one of them got lost (they simply snap in). Naturally, as the owner of a 3D printer, I immediately thought “I can print a replacement!”

While I could have designed an exact duplicate, I did not think this was advisable as the complete part would have required supports, and likely would not have smooth surfaces where needed after printing. Instead, I designed the part split the part in half lengthwise, with the idea that two halves could be glued together after printing.

In addition, splitting the part resulted in a nice flat surface for good bed adhesion. Since the part was “solid”, internal supports (rectilinear infill) was generated automatically in the slicer. Further, the “flat side down” orientation enabled the snap fit lug to be printed in the strongest orientation.

Since I knew the two halves would be glued together, I also included holes for alignment pins in the design. The alignment pins make it much easier to hold the parts in alignment while gluing, and also add some additional strength to the part.

Note that the alignment pins are not solid pins, but are designed as “spring pins.” These print faster with less filament usage, and provide a tight fit in the holes for the pins.

Print Instructions :

Print in PLA using the 3mf or gcode files provided.
