Handle For Cake Slice

I know which end of a screwdriver to hit a nail with, so many of my neighbors think I'm a Mr Fixit. People keep popping in with things for me to fix. This time it was Joan, another octogenarian who's always pestering me about something or other. In fact, I've started thinking that having the word "mug" tattooed on my forehead all those years ago was a mistake. Joan came over and gave me a stainless steel cake slice with a broken handle and asked if I could glue it back together. Unfortunately, the handle was bone, had been through the dishwasher too many times, and was brittle and flaky. No amount of glue would hold it together - although I did joke that maybe we could put a cast on it! Joan was disappointed to hear that the handle was beyond repair, so she asked if I could make a new one out of wood. I probably could have done it, but I suggested using my 3D printer instead. When I told her what I meant, she looked confused, so I said to leave it with me. I designed the new handle on Sketchup in about 10 minutes and planned to print it with ABS. But each time I tried, it got two thirds of the way through before detaching from the Buildtak. So, I switched to PLA and was able to get a good print out. After heating up the cake slice's shaft and gently pushing it into its new handle, I declared the job "a good 'un". No doubt it will end up in the dishwasher again someday, but for now, I think I've earned a slice of one of her delicious cakes!
