Handheld 3-Axis Gimbal For GoPro, Yi, Runcam2 or Rollei410
thingiverse
I made a handheld gimbal from spare parts, starting with the crossfire2 quadcopter and its case for the GoPro. I initially designed a mount for my actioncam, the Rollei, then adapted it for a Runcam and finally a Xiaomi Yi. Redesigning the gimbal to work on three axes instead of two proved successful. Next, I thought of creating a handheld gimbal using those same parts and recalled the rig by Thumber, which I modified to accommodate a smartphone as well. To build this handheld gimbal, all I had to do was design a simple base plate that fit onto the rig. I added a motor mount and a plate to carry the controller. No dampening balls were needed since there are no propellers generating vibrations. Nylon screws can be used for mounting the board; I opted for self-adhesive velcro pads instead, allowing me to remove the board when needed. Underneath the plate lies a slot for attaching a battery using a velcro strip. I employed a Storm32 controller, three 2208 motors, and a 2s-lipo. Since no joystick was added, I operate in Pan-Hod-Pan mode; see the video for clarification. For PID settings, refer to the screenshot of my Runcam setup or consult the Storm32 Wiki for guidance on optimizing performance. This handheld gimbal design is versatile, with the rig and base plate being common across all cameras. The arms and cases are named in a way that facilitates easy combination. Required components include 3mm screws, a velcro strip for the battery, and possibly another velcro pad to secure the controller. When printing, ensure the gimbal_arm0 receives support, as do the cases. Print the base plate upright without support. FreeCAD files are available in the remixed sources for most parts.
