Handcuffs, restraining instruments securing an individual's wrists closely, consist of two parts connected by a chain, hinge, or bar. Each half includes a rotating arm that engages with a ratchet to lock it in place around the wrist. The cuffs can only be opened with a key, rendering the wearer unable to move their wrists more than a few centimeters/inches apart. This immobilization is often employed for suspected criminals to prevent escapes during police custody.
