I run elastic through the top holes and secure it tightly at the tip of my fingers and inside of my palm using normal string threaded through bottom holes. When I perform the first iteration of the hand, I tie the non-elastic strings in a loop around the bottom of my finger tips; however, depending on the thickness used, it's possible to simply tie it off at the tip. Leaving the bottom strings long allows them to be pulled, causing the hand to close effectively.
