Hamburg was launched as the second ship in the Sachsen class frigate lineup before being commissioned into the German Navy. Based at Wilhelmshaven, she initially joined 1. Fregattengeschwader with fellow Sachsen-class vessels before transitioning to 2. Fregattengeschwader on January 9, 2005. This change was part of a broader reorganization that saw 2. Fregattengeschwader become part of Einsatzflottille 2 on June 27, 2005. The Sachsen class represents Germany's cutting-edge air-defense frigates. Building upon the design of the F123 Brandenburg class, the Sachsen-class frigate boasts enhanced stealth capabilities aimed at evading an opponent's radar and acoustic sensors. Notably, this class is equipped with a sophisticated multifunction radar called APAR and a SMART-L long-range radar, touted for its ability to detect stealth aircraft and missiles. Three ships were constructed as part of this class: Sachsen, Hamburg, and Hessen.
