Liberty was launched in 1907 for Joseph Pulitzer, a renowned newspaper publisher, at a cost of $1.5 million dollars. Designed by G.L. Watson and constructed by Ramage & Ferguson of Leith, it stood as one of the largest private yachts ever built during that time. Pulitzer passed away on board in 1911, and Liberty was subsequently sold to Scottish-Canadian businessman James Ross in either 1911 or 1912, who renamed it Glencairn. Ross died in 1913, and Viscount Tredegar acquired the yacht. During World War I, Liberty was requisitioned for military use. Following the war, Tredegar sold the yacht to Sir Robert Houston, a shipping magnate, who also met his demise on board in 1926. Lady Houston, Sir Robert's wife, resided on board during the 1930s and held strong disdain for Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald; as such, she sailed around Britain with "DOWN WITH MACDONALD THE TRAITOR" displayed prominently in giant electric lights on the rigging. Upon her passing in 1936, Liberty was sold to be scrapped and dismantled in 1938.
