Hafted Knife, XCB-105-1998. A Tool of Ancient Hunters. 400 BCE - 100 CE. Adamagan, a name meaning Place of Walrus Hunters in the Aleut language, marks the location of this massive village at Morzhovoi Bay on the western Alaska Peninsula. During its occupation from 400 BCE to 100 CE, Adamagan was the largest settlement in the Arctic, home to an estimated population of 1,000 people. Multiple occupations have been identified within the village, with limited evidence dating back as far as 2,200-1,700 BCE and 900-1100 CE. Research grants from NSF supported these findings, including NSF 9630072, NSF 9814086, NSF 9996372, NSF 9996415, NSF 1139266, and NSF 1321411. Principal Investigator H. Maschner led this research effort under NSF funding. Scanning of artifacts was completed using a Faro Edge Arm or Minolta Vivid 9i scanner, with subsequent processing done in Geomagic or Polyworks software. Texture mapping in Geomagic Wrap utilized between 2-8 photos per artifact.
