Hades, the Greek deity, is known as the god of the deceased and ruler of the underworld. He is the eldest son of Cronus and Rhea, born after his father swallowed him but later regurgitated. Alongside brothers Zeus and Poseidon, Hades overthrew their father's generation, the Titans, claiming control of the cosmos. Hades was granted dominion over the underworld while Zeus took the sky and Poseidon, the sea. The earth belonged to all three. Hades was often accompanied by his watchdog Cerberus, a three-headed creature. Etruscan god Aita and Roman deities Dis Pater and Orcus were equated with Hades, leading to their merging into Pluto, a Latin adaptation of the euphemistic title Plouton typically given to Hades in Greek mythology.
