Gyroscope with precession
grabcad
Original dynamic simulation showcases a gyroscope initially balanced on a support with a mobile part represented by a rod and weight. The system is unbalanced when a second weight is added, demonstrating instability before settling into precession movement. Autodesk Inventor offers .iam and .ipt files for assemblies in equilibrium (one weight) and imbalance (two weights). Four tests are suggested: 1) gyroscope at rest in equilibrium, 2) rotating gyroscope with no movement in mobile part, 3) imbalanced system with instantaneous rod inclination, and 4) initial instability followed by precession. Rotational speed is 58937 deg/s reached on a linear ramp in 2 seconds. Friction coefficient of 0.25 is used for two-weight scenario to eliminate instability. In real situations, instability observed in test 4 would not occur due to different application methods. Quick demonstrations of precession movement can be achieved using bike wheel or motorized gyroscope seen in provided YouTube links. For manufacturing the assembly parts, refer to the precise tools and techniques shown in a series of clips. Enjoy!
