A gimbal is a pivotal support that enables an object's rotation about a single axis. Three orthogonally mounted gimbals can keep an innermost object's position stable despite its support's rotation, like in shipboard compasses and gyroscopes. This suspension mechanism is also known as a Cardan suspension, named after Gerolamo Cardano who described it extensively. Gyroscopes are spinning wheels or discs with a freely rotating axis, maintaining their orientation regardless of the mount's tilting or rotation due to the conservation of angular momentum; hence they are useful for orientation measurement and maintenance.
