Municipal facilities, sports venues and fitness centers, along with performance halls that host live music events. Based on usage patterns, indoor athletic complexes can be broadly categorized into two types: large event spaces and sports arenas. Similarly, they can be grouped based on the types of sporting activities conducted within them - ice hockey rinks, track and field facilities or basketball courts are some examples; by physical size, they can be further divided into giant structures, mid-sized multipurpose rooms and compact mini-venues. Currently, China boasts over 8,000 massive arenas dubbed large stadiums, while having fewer than 3,000 smaller sports complexes known as medium-sized gyms or community centers that also serve as indoor venues for a wide range of artistic performances as cultural arts venues and theaters.
