While George Washington struggled with dental issues for most of his life, the tale that his false teeth were made from wood is entirely unfounded. In reality, George Washington had dentures crafted from an assortment of materials, including human teeth. During the 18th century, it was a common practice among dentists to acquire teeth from impoverished individuals for use in dentures or tooth transplants. In 1784, Washington purchased nine teeth from several "Negroes" for 122 shillings, which accounted for less than one-third of the payment advertised to poor white Americans. It is highly likely that these individuals were enslaved people residing at Mount Vernon.
