In Germany around 1440, goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg revolutionized publishing with the invention of the printing press, sparking a Printing Revolution that transformed the way information was disseminated. Building on the design of existing screw presses, a single Renaissance printing press could produce up to 3,600 pages per workday, a staggering improvement over hand-printing which yielded just forty pages and hand-copying which barely managed a few. Gutenberg's ingenious hand mould enabled the swift and precise creation of metal movable type in vast quantities. The combination of his two groundbreaking inventions, the hand mould and the printing press, dramatically slashed the cost of printing books and other documents in Europe, making it significantly more affordable for shorter print runs.
