The guitar, typically having six strings, is played with both hands by strumming or plucking the strings while fretting them with fingers. It comes in acoustic and electric versions, including classical, steel-string acoustic, archtop (or jazz), solid-body electric, hollow body electric, and more. The modern guitar was influenced by its predecessors like the gittern, vihuela, and Renaissance/baroque guitars. Acoustic guitars project sound via their hollow bodies, while electric guitars use amplifiers and loudspeakers to boost volume and enable electronic manipulation of tone using an equalizer and various effects units, such as distortion and reverb. Guitars have been a key instrument in blues, rock, metal, punk, and numerous other genres. The term "guitar" encompasses many chordophones dating back to classical times, with influences from the European lute and Middle Eastern oud. Spanish guitars, like the guitarra latina and morisca, emerged by the 12th century, followed by the vihuela in the 15th-16th centuries, the five-course baroque guitar (mid-16th to mid-18th centuries), and finally the modern form credited to Antonio Torres Jurado around 1850.
