Guiro
thingiverse
The instrument we're going to build is a percussion instrument from Latin America, made from an open-ended gourd with parallel notches cut into one side. We'll rub a stick or tines along these notches to create a ratchet sound. Print Settings Printer Brand: LulzBot Printer: Mini Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: Doesn't Matter Inspiration Our class assignment was to build an instrument with two or more parts, and I chose a percussion instrument for its simplicity. The guiro caught my eye because it's such an interesting instrument. History The guiro is widely used in Puerto Rican, Cuban, and other Latin American music genres like son, trova, and salsa, playing a key role in the rhythm section of these styles. Process To create the guiro, I made an ellipse with a hole through it, then used cylinders to add ridges along its four sides. The stick is simply a Truncated Cone with both top and bottom filleted for smooth edges. Some challenges arose when trying to fillet the edges around the hole, but I eventually gave up on that idea.
