Guide Stone (Sign), Plum Lane,Shipton-u-Wychwood
sketchfab
19th century guide stone in the wall of Coldstone Barn on Plum Lane at the corner with High Street (A361), Shipton-Under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire, UK. Erected by Charlbury Roads Turnpike Trust in 1800. Central part of white limestone guide stone is set slightly into the wall, while outer border made of yellow limestone has internal chamfer molding. Hand and border have been lightly carved into the stone and colored black. Background is white-washed onto a smooth surface possibly plastered/mortared layer. Someone tried to break the stone out of the wall but failed. Letters and hand to the left of the sign are defaced by chiseling, likely after turnpike trust ended. No date recorded, possibly 1880? The sign points to three locations: To Leafield, with a hand pointing left. Ascott And Charlbury Photographed on June 21, 2015.
