Grutas del Palacio (Grutas del Palacio Geopark)

The Grutas del Palacio geopark is situated in Flores, Uruguay. Formed by the relentless forces of water erosion, these caves boast a robust shell or ceiling that stands at an impressive seventy centimeters thick. This remarkable structure is supported by a series of ferrified sandstone columns, which rise majestically to an average height of two meters. Despite being subjected to erosive processes for thousands of years, these resilient columns have managed to withstand the test of time. As part of the National System of Protected Areas, the Grutas del Palacio geopark plays a vital role in preserving Uruguay's natural heritage. Moreover, it proudly bears the distinction of being one of UNESCO's globally recognized geoparks.
