This single crystal of grossular is part of a collection of 50 mineral specimens purchased from Gregory Bottley & Lloyd company in Chelsea England back in the early 1960s. Grossular is one of several varieties of garnet minerals with the chemical formula Ca₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃. Given its pale coloration, it's likely almost entirely composed of the pure end-member. Garnet crystals belong to the cubic crystal system and this specimen is an almost perfect rhombic dodecahedron form with 12 flat faces. Although garnets can crystallize in many different forms, this is the most common one. The crystal measures 20 mm across its longest dimension.
