Title: Groot Zeil Artist: Harry Kivijarvi Date: 1968 Medium: Granite Dimensions: 220cm Accession #: 133928 Credit: Displayed at the Middelheim Museum Harry Mikael Kivijarvi (July 25, 1931 in Turku - April 15, 2010 in Espoo, Finland) was a renowned Finnish sculptor. His breakthrough came when he defeated the President JK Paasikivi memorial design contest in 1976, making Stone Lake widely known to the public. Kivijarvi attended the Turku Art Society drawing school between 1947 and 1950, where he developed his skills. He created metallic figurative statuettes and participated in the Sibelius monument figurative draft competition, finishing second. However, his most notable works are massive granite sculptures, often black or white, featuring smooth surfaces and composed of large stone blocks.
