Developed in Germany during the 1970s by Grob Aircraft AG as a counterpart to their popular single-seat G 102 Astir model, the two-seat sailplane known as the Grob G 103 Twin Astir showcased cutting-edge engineering techniques from its manufacturer. Constructing this versatile glider bore marked similarities to other designs within their catalog; however, a subtle modification was introduced - slight forward sweeps to the wings were implemented in order to achieve balance throughout. Unlike many two-seat variations built off of single-seater sailplanes, Grob made use of an innovative retraction mechanism for their Twin Astir. Designed to address concerns brought on by limited space availability within its spacious cabin area thanks to the additional seat's inclusion, a novel design approach resulted in this glider sporting a single, 90 degree sideways rotation retracting under the rear seating section as opposed to fixed landing gear often utilized. The rather unique angle formed here is quite striking considering passenger position - an altogether distinct and notable experience was achieved.
