Another addition to the Animal Collection. The North American brown bear (Ursus arctos ssp.) is a massive population of brown bear thriving throughout North America. Several distinct morphological forms are acknowledged as subspecies, including the mainland grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis), Kodiak bear (U. a. middendorffi), peninsular grizzly (U. a. gyas), and the now-extinct California grizzly (U. a. californicus†) and Mexican grizzly bear (U. a. nelsoni†). Typically, bears near the coast are larger in size while inland grizzlies tend to be smaller. The Ussuri brown bear (U. a. lasiotus), which inhabits Russia, Northern China, Japan, and Korea, is often referred to as the black grizzly; however, it belongs to a different subspecies from those found in America.
