As you know, October marks a significant month for me, with a contest to design innovative Assistive Technology and a special reason to celebrate - my grandmother's birthday. A little over ten years ago, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, a condition that ultimately led to her passing. The eight years I had left to care for her were filled with memories of watching her health slowly decline in nursing homes and hospitals. My time spent by her side ignited a desire to create solutions to make her life easier. In looking back on those challenging moments, I found the inspiration for Grip_Zz. This innovative design combines elements of a motorcycle grip with pressure plates, allowing individuals to hold objects securely without fear of them slipping from their grasp. By extending the average handle of an object placed in its receptacle, Grip_Zz simplifies everyday tasks like brushing teeth or using utensils. For those struggling with debilitating diseases, this device means that care is more accessible and convenient. From personal experience, I can attest to the difficulties my grandmother faced when it came to remembering to hold a toothbrush. The introduction of Grip_Zz into her care would have significantly eased these challenges, as nurses could use the device in tandem with guiding tools to promote thorough oral hygiene. I deeply wish that my grandmother was still with me, but I'm convinced that creating Grip_Zz - designed to enhance handle extensions for everyday objects - would have boosted her spirits during trying times of her illness. **Features:** Interior pressure plates allow for secure object retention. A specialized slot accommodates both spoons and forks. Safety rings add an extra layer of security. The current prototype, a preliminary Mach 1 version, is awaiting refinements. Future plans include sharing periodic updates, along with possible video demonstrations and new versions. By the contest deadline, I aim to finalize: Comfort-oriented options Smooth edges for ergonomic comfort Testing with both print and video reviews Safe, hands-on use demonstration An optional printed lanyard attachment Expansion on design elements, including: Rounded corners for gentle grip comfort Printed or custom sizing preferences Additions of new materials or functionalities Upgrade pathways will ensure that Grip_Zz continues to evolve. The contest's October deadline is drawing near - until then, any thoughts, comments, and words from readers regarding their loved ones are most welcome. **Dedication** To Grandma, I dedicate the development of Grip_Zz to her cherished memory, honoring the inspiration she brought me during trying times in nursing homes and hospitals. My love for her remains strong; here's wishing you a happy day!
