Update 1: New Palm Added with Changed Plug. This is a prosthetic hand design, "Gripper Palm Remixed V.G3D," which uses Torsion Spring to create a more natural grip. You can use the Gripper palm with Spring for your own projects. The original Gripper Thumb Terminal Device was created by Skip, but we've remixed and improved its functionality. The O-ring used in the original design would fail after multiple actuations, preventing it from returning to its original position. We tried using multiple O-rings to strengthen it, but they didn't have enough strength to withstand repeated use. To address this issue, my team and I decided to remix the functionality part of the device. We kept the natural look of the design, which makes it easier for recipients to adapt. We modified the Thumb and Palm by creating space for a Torsion Stainless Steel Spring (2mm diameter wire, 7mm inner diameter). We also used a piece of Mild Steel rod (4mm diameter) to keep the spring in place. This improved actuation and grabbing force significantly. The plug was also modified from Skip's original design. He had created a separate plug that attached to the gripper palm, using standard bolt threads for the region. However, we needed to attach it to a 3D printed forearm, which increased the total hand length. To solve this issue, we incorporated the plug within the palm, creating a single part. You can see more details in this video: https://youtu.be/I04k_kN-l5M. Using the Gripper Palm, you can now attach it to the modified Unlimbited arm and create a remixed version for recipients with below-elbow amputations. I'll share the forearm and cuff design soon, so you can make your own remix version. For more information, visit http://www.grit3d.com.
