This was a base of a statue. The reliefs on four sides vividly depict Satyrs and Maenads in lively symposium scenes that draw heavily from the world of Dionysus. Elegantly designed decorations, as well as the style of three out of the four scenes (the fourth scene on the back side is a later addition), are unmistakably characteristic of Roman art during the early Augustan period, dating back to the end of the 1st century BC.
