Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol was a French sculptor, painter, designer and illustrator who began his career as a painter and tapestry designer before devoting himself to three-dimensional work after approximately 1900. He became one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century through his dedication to sculpture. In 1900, Maillol started working on his first major sculpture, a Seated Woman, for which he used his wife as the model and later named it La Méditerranée. The first version of this sculpture, completed in 1902, closely resembled its original model and can be found displayed at the MOMA in New York City. A second version of the sculpture is showcased in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.
